Escape to the Mountains...Ride The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway

Blue Ridge Scenic Railway en RouteWhen you hear the sound of the train whistle it's time to come aboard for a ride on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway. Your entire family will enjoy the ride on the Georgia Northeastern. The train route consists of a 26-mile round trip through historic Murphy Junction and along the beautiful Toccoa River.

This railroad was built over 100 years ago and is the only mainline railroad excursion service based in Georgia. The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway is an enchanting train ride alongside the beautiful Toccoa River from historic downtown Blue Ridge, Georgia to McCaysville, Georgia at the Georgia/Tennessee line where the Toccoa River turns into the Ocoee River, home of the 1996 Whitewater Olympic Games. This stop permits passengers to disembark and have a two-hour layover, allowing time to have lunch, do some shopping, or just explore the two cities.

The view from the train cars changes with the seasons, wildflowers and mountain laurel in the spring, rhododendron in the summer, gorgeous foliage in the fall and a ride with Santa and his elves for Christmas.  It's fun for the entire family!

The rail adventure is a 3 1/2 hour 26 mile round trip, with a 1 1/2 hour layover to explore the quaint town of McCaysville, Georgia with antique and specialty shops dotted alongside the Toccoa/Ocoee Rivers.  After this day of fun, enjoy a great dinner at one of the fine diners in downtown Blue Ridge. Trains generally run Fridays to Mondays, March to December, with some exceptions. Visit the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway ticket office and station for the most up-to-date schedule.

The last passenger train to operate over this line was a one-time special trip that ran in the 1960s. The route was originally built as the narrow-gauge Marietta & North Georgia Railroad. Construction began in Marietta in 1877 and reached Blue Ridge in 1886.

The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway ticket office was originally the L & N Railroad Depot built in 1905. The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway was placed in the Historical Register in 1983. The depot is located at 241 Depot Street in the heart of downtown Blue Ridge, Georgia.
